According to Trump, following the meeting, he became "much more confident" about the possibility of reaching a peaceful agreement. He also noted that Russia is eager to end the "wild barbarism" of war and that both sides are interested in finding a way out of the current situation.
The U.S. President emphasized the necessity of concluding the conflict, as it has already resulted in significant losses. He also expressed disappointment that Ukraine did not participate in the negotiations, observing that Kyiv "had three years to come to the negotiating table."
Previously, on February 12, Trump had a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, after which the commencement of the negotiation process was announced. However, the absence of representatives from Ukraine and European countries at the meeting drew criticism from Kyiv and leaders of Western nations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine does not recognize the outcomes of negotiations conducted without its involvement.
Despite Trump's assurance of a successful conclusion to the talks, experts express doubts about their effectiveness without the inclusion of all interested parties. They stress that a long-term peace agreement is only feasible if the interests of all conflict participants are taken into account.
We also remind you why EU leaders urged Ukraine not to cease fire without a peace agreement and what to expect from the war moving forward.
