The 1989 Mazda MX-5 has been given a new lease on life. The famous affordable sports car has been converted into an electric vehicle. This is reported by Motor1.
The unique tuning of the first-generation Mazda MX-5 was carried out by the British workshop Electrogenic, which specializes in transforming classic cars into electric vehicles. Notably, they also electrified the vintage Rolls-Royce of Jason Momoa.
The Mazda MX-5 roadster is now equipped with an electric motor producing 163 hp and 310 Nm of torque. The sports car has only gained 100 kg in weight (now totaling 1100 kg), resulting in a significant performance boost — it accelerates to 100 km/h in 6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 185 km/h.
A compact 42 kWh battery provides a range of over 240 km. The powertrain features both sporty and economical driving modes.
Visually and internally, the Mazda MX-5 remains unchanged. The charging port has been placed where the fuel filler cap used to be, and the cabin retains the gear shift lever (now controlling the driving modes).
Production of the electric Mazda MX-5 will be made to order, with the conversion costing approximately $20,000.
