A perpetrator who damaged a memorial in Izyum has been apprehended in the Kharkiv region.
This information was reported by the communication department of the National Police of Ukraine in the Kharkiv region, as conveyed by "Dumka".
According to the police, a local resident stole two aluminum plates bearing the names of those who perished during World War II. It has been established that the incident occurred in late September 2024 in the city of Izyum. The aluminum plaques from the memorial were partially sold by the offender at a scrap metal collection point, and the money received was spent on personal needs.
Subsequently, law enforcement identified the location of the metal items and the identity of the offender. He turned out to be a 46-year-old resident of the city.
So far, the suspect has been informed of the charges against him for committing a criminal offense as stipulated in part 3 of Article 297 (Desecration of a grave, another burial site, or the body of a deceased person) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The man faces up to seven years in prison.
