In Kharkiv, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) dismantled an agent-combat group of Russian intelligence that was planning new attacks in the city.
This information was provided to the publication "Dumka" by Vladyslav Abdula, spokesperson for the SBU in the Kharkiv region.
According to Abdula, the SBU's counterintelligence neutralized a group of agents from the Russian military intelligence in Kharkiv. They were engaged in subversive activities, spying on Ukrainian military personnel, and preparing new terrorist acts.
Back in June of this year, the perpetrators detonated a vehicle belonging to a Ukrainian Armed Forces soldier, resulting in severe injuries. To execute the crime, the agents tracked the parking location of the car and placed explosives underneath it.
The group consisted of four local residents, including a software engineer, a former military officer, and two unemployed individuals. They were coordinated by a militant from the so-called "DNR special forces," operating under the control of the Russian GRU.
After the first terrorist attack, the perpetrators planned new assaults: they manufactured another explosive device and attempted to place it in a hideout, as well as prepared a sabotage operation on the railway to disrupt the transportation of Ukrainian Armed Forces equipment.
Counterintelligence operatives documented the crimes and apprehended all group members. One of them was caught in the act of placing explosives in a wooded area, while the others were detained during searches of their homes. Explosives, mobile phones, and equipment were seized on the spot.
The detained individuals have been informed of suspicion under articles relating to state treason, illegal handling of explosives, and additional charges are expected under articles concerning sabotage and terrorist acts.
The saboteurs face life imprisonment with property confiscation. The operation was conducted by the SBU of the Kharkiv region with the support of the prosecutor's office.
