The Mayor of Kharkiv, Igor Terekhov, discussed the measures aimed at ensuring accessibility in the city, as well as the challenges that need to be addressed.
This information was reported by the KP "Kharkiv Metro," citing the speech of the Kharkiv city head Igor Terekhov, as conveyed by "Dumka."
According to Terekhov, despite the difficulties of wartime, efforts are underway in Kharkiv to create a city accessible to everyone. He shared this during a conversation with students.
He mentioned that the city is implementing a series of initiatives to improve living conditions for people with disabilities. In particular, public transport stops are being upgraded, ramps are being installed in buildings, and low-floor vehicles are being purchased.
However, there are issues that require significant financial investment.
"The most challenging aspect is with the metro. Some stations cannot yet be adapted for people with disabilities. However, new stations are already equipped with the necessary transitions," Terekhov noted.
Another issue is the lack of feasibility in installing ramps or elevators in old five-story buildings. To address this, city authorities are working on a mechanism that will allow people with disabilities to be provided with apartments on the ground floors, while their previous residences will be transferred to communal ownership.
Kharkiv continues to adapt to new realities while making important strides in creating a comfortable and accessible environment for its residents.
