A cosmic Bermuda Triangle is forming above Earth, and the anomaly is becoming even more bizarre. Check out the video for more details!

Between South America and southwestern Africa lies a massive anomaly in the Earth's magnetic field, which is under close observation by NASA, reports ScienceAlert.

This region has been named the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA), informally dubbed the "space Bermuda Triangle." In this area, the strength of the Earth's magnetic field significantly weakens, raising concerns for NASA. The reason is that satellites and spacecraft in this region become more vulnerable to charged particles from the Sun.

NASA compares the SAA to a sort of "dent" in the Earth's magnetic field or "gap in space." It generally does not affect life on the Earth's surface, but the same cannot be said for orbital spacecraft, including the ISS.

The reduced magnetic field intensity within the anomaly can disable satellites if they are bombarded by high-energy protons from the Sun.

Such strikes may cause only low-level disruptions, but they carry a high risk of data loss. That is why satellite operators regularly shut down spacecraft systems before they enter the troubled area.

Experts believe that the anomaly was created by the African Large Low Shear Velocity Province, located about 2900 km beneath the African continent. This province disrupts the generation of the magnetic field in the region.

Researchers do not fully understand the magnetic anomaly and its implications, but new theories are gradually shedding light on the phenomenon.

For instance, NASA heliophysicist Ashley Greeley concluded that the SAA is slowly drifting. This finding has also been corroborated by data from CubeSats.

But that's not all. Apparently, the magnetic anomaly is in the process of splitting into two parts. Scientists believe that the SAA is dividing into two separate cells, each of which serves as a center of minimal magnetic intensity within an even larger anomaly.

As a reminder, scientists discussed what's wrong with the gravitational anomaly in the Gulf of Mexico. The strange anomaly was first noticed in 1978 on a magnetic map of the area by employees of an oil company.
