NATO will not strike Russia first, but in the event of an attack, there will be an immediate response. The first targets will be Russian launchers. This was stated by NATO Military Committee Chairman Admiral Rob Bauer during a discussion at the European Policy Centre.
"What I mean is that the idea used to be that we are a defensive Alliance, so we would sit and wait until we are attacked. Then, when we are attacked, we could intercept the 'arrows' (missiles - ed.) that come our way. But it is more prudent not only to do that but also to strike the 'shooter' who is in Russia if Russia attacks us," the admiral said.
He added that member countries of the Alliance need to destroy weapons systems that could be used to strike NATO countries.
"And, of course, since we are a defensive alliance, we will have to take the first hit," he clarified.
Admiral Rob Bauer noted that countries need to invest more in air defense and stockpile long-range weapons in light of the threat of war with Russia.
It is worth mentioning that former German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated that the war in Ukraine would have started earlier if she had not blocked the initiation of Kyiv's movement towards NATO in 2008.
