Earlier this year, a tiny gray cat named Rain Bow embarked on an epic journey, covering 1,448 kilometers from Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming back to California, reports IFLScience.
The story began during a vacation in America’s oldest national park when the cat went hiking with his family. Owners Benny and Susanna Angiano, along with Rain Bow and another cat, arrived at the Fishing Bridge RV Park campsite in Yellowstone on June 4. Shortly after their arrival, their pet got scared and ran off into the woods. Four days of searching yielded no results, and the family was forced to return home to California without their pet.
Fortunately, this story has an impressive happy ending: 60 days after his disappearance, the brave cat returned home. He was found by pet tracking staff just 322 kilometers from home. It was reported that the animal was located in Roseville, California, and the family was informed that the cat was at a local branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. A local resident discovered Rain Bow wandering the streets. On August 3, she managed to catch the cat and bring him to the shelter.
How exactly Rain Bow managed to travel hundreds of kilometers from Yellowstone to Roseville remains a mystery, but the owners believe he did it on his own. When the animal finally returned home, he was in poor condition—over 60 days, the cat lost about 2.7 kilograms. According to Susanna, she and her husband believe that their pet covered most of the distance on his own, as his paws were battered and he had lost about 40% of his weight. Additionally, the animal had an extremely low protein level due to inadequate nutrition.
The owners also report that they have taken safety measures to ensure that none of their pets get lost again: both cats were equipped with air tags, and Rain Bow received a GPS tracker to prevent a similar story from happening.
It’s worth noting that Rain Bow is not the only fearless animal that has managed to cover such a long distance on its own. Previously, scientists spoke about a manatee named Tico that traveled 4,000 kilometers from Brazil to Venezuela.
