According to data from ISW, published video recordings from January 1 confirm that Russian forces have captured Vozdvizhanka, located east of Pokrovsk. Furthermore, footage from January 5 suggests that the occupiers have advanced and secured positions in Sviridonovka and Timofeevka. There are also reports of advances into the southeastern part of Yelizavetovka, resulting from a mechanized assault.
A key element of Russia's strategy in this area is control over the T-0504 highway, which connects Pokrovsk and Konstantinovka. According to Russian "military correspondents," reconnaissance and sabotage groups of the Russian Armed Forces have already taken positions north of Timofeevka and along this road.
Ukrainian forces continue to hold the defense in the Pokrovsk area despite increasing pressure. The main objective of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is to prevent the encirclement of the city and to maintain control over key transport hubs.
“The real goal of Russia is to force the Armed Forces of Ukraine to withdraw forces from other sections of the front to defend Pokrovsk. However, a successful defense of the city is possible due to mobile actions and the effective use of reserves,” analysts from ISW note.
