In comments to journalists aboard Air Force One on February 9, Trump confirmed the conversation took place but declined to disclose any details.
“I had it. Let’s just say I had it… And I expect many more talks. We need to end this war,” he emphasized.
The President added that the U.S. maintains communication with both Ukraine and Russia:
“We are talking to both sides.”
However, the Kremlin, according to spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, was unable to confirm the talks.
“Given the multitude of these communications, I personally may not be aware of something, so I cannot confirm or deny it,” Peskov stated on February 9.
Upon returning to the White House, Trump repeatedly stressed the need for direct engagement with Putin to bring the war to an end. His approach significantly differs from that of former President Joe Biden, who ceased communications with the Kremlin after the war began.
