Mykhailo Drapaty was born on November 21, 1982, in Kamianets-Podilskyi, Khmelnytskyi Oblast. In 2004, he graduated from the Kharkiv Institute of Tank Troops named after the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and began his military career in the 72nd Separate Mechanized Brigade.
He gained particular fame in 2014 when he commanded the 2nd mechanized battalion of the same brigade. Under his leadership, the unit provided defense for Mariupol during the most challenging battles. His breakthrough into the city on May 9, 2014, became legendary, when the battalion entered Mariupol on armored vehicles to reinforce the forces after the occupiers attempted to seize the local police station.
