Macron reminded that France has actively supported sovereign African states in their fight against terrorist groups for many years. The military operations of the French army, particularly in the Sahel, were aimed at countering jihadists linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State. During France's participation in these operations, 58 French soldiers lost their lives.
“We came at the request of sovereign states. But now, when these countries are led by military juntas that have aligned themselves with Russia, there is no longer a place for France in these regions. We are not supporters of the coup leaders,” Macron stated.
The withdrawal of French troops began in 2022 and has affected Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, where new military regimes have taken power. By the end of 2023, the first French contingent left Chad, and the completion of their presence in Senegal is expected soon. The President of Senegal emphasized that the presence of foreign troops in the country is not in line with its sovereignty.
Additionally, we remind you that ISW has assessed the prospects of a new offensive by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Kharkiv region.
