According to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, the summit did not result in any official decisions. However, participants emphasized the need for enhanced cooperation on defense matters and the search for a common strategy regarding Ukraine.
Increased Military Spending
EU leaders expressed their readiness to boost defense expenditures, acknowledging that such investments are no longer viewed as excessive.
“There’s no need to be annoyed if our American allies say: spend more, be stronger and more resilient,” noted Donald Tusk.
He emphasized that the EU has adopted the logic that Poland has advocated for many months, and that the increase in military spending should occur at both the individual country level and across the entire European Union.
Support for Ukraine
European leaders are confident that Europe will be able to effectively support Ukraine in defending its sovereignty if it can establish its own resilient defense. Currently, the EU lacks sufficient mechanisms to protect against external threats, but work in this direction is ongoing.
