According to Lee Sung-jun, a representative of the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff, the DPRK has begun preparations for these actions by installing special coverings along the roads, likely with the intention of detonating them.
“It is quite possible that explosions may occur today (October 14),” noted Lee Sung-jun.
However, he also emphasized that South Korea does not intend to provoke, although it is ready to respond decisively in the event of an attack.
The escalation of relations between North and South Korea occurred last week when Pyongyang accused Seoul of using drones and threatened to respond to these actions with all available means. Additionally, the DPRK has already blocked the roads and railways connecting the two countries and has put its artillery on the border on combat readiness. In response, South Korea threatened strict measures in case of further provocations.
Amid rising tensions, the U.S. is sending Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell to South Korea to help resolve the situation and reduce the threat of further escalation of the conflict.
